READING: Colossians 1-2 – Paul’s Prayer, Preeminence of Christ, & Alive in Christ

Paul’s prayer for the Colossians was a prayer of thanksgiving for their faith, love, and “the hope laid up for them in heaven.” The gospel had come to them and was bearing fruit since the day they first heard it and understood God’s grace. Paul said from the day he heard of them, “We have prayed for you to be filled with the knowledge of His will in spiritual wisdom and understanding, so as to walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to Him: bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; being strengthened with the power of His glorious might for enduring patience with joy.”

Then Paul offered a paeon of praise to the preeminence of Jesus. He is the image of the invisible God. He created all things, in heaven and on earth, visible or invisible. He created thrones, dominions, rulers, or authorities – all things were created by Him and for Him. The powers of darkness we wrestle against in Ephesians are good powers gone bad – like Eve who rebelled against God when the serpent told her eating fruit of the tree would make her wise like God.

You, who were enemies of God were reconciled to Him when he came in His body of flesh to live among us. He will present you holy and blameless before Him, IF you continue in the faith, not moving from your hope of glory.

Paul encourages them, “As you received Christ, walk in Him, rooted and built up in Him, established in the faith as you were taught. See that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ.”

Here is circumcision, promised yesterday, in 2:11ff. You were circumcised with a circumcision made without hands by putting off the flesh by the circumcision of Christ. Therefore, Paul said in Philippians 3:3 that we who worship God in the Spirit, and glory in Christ Jesus and put no confidence in the flesh are the true circumcision the Jews made into a false idol.

After we are buried with him in baptism, we are raised with him through faith in God’s powerful working, God makes us alive as He raised Jesus from the dead. God has forgiven us of all trespasses by canceling the record of debt that stood against us. He set it aside, nailing it to His cross. So, do not let anyone pass judgment on you in questions of food, drink, festivals, a new moon, or a Sabbath. These are a shadow of the things to come, but the substance belongs to Christ.

Paul’s message to Colossae is what he preached everywhere: faith in God, love for Him and your neighbor, the assurance of hope, the strength of Christ’s resurrection, spiritual wisdom, and walking worthy of the Lord Jesus to name a few of the intertwined teachings of the gospel.

Why do we make doctrine complicated?

Father in Heaven, my prayer is that I learn the simple things about You and go on from there to deeper things as I am able. This is my petition, in the name of Jesus, Your Son, and my precious Savior, AMEN!

MY PRAYER FOR YOU (and for myself)

Holy Father my prayer for all who read this and for myself, is that we meditate on what Paul says about circumcision in chapter two. What is it? What does it do? Who is the power behind the Circumcision Paul talks about? I offer this prayer for myself, and for all who read this, in the precious name of Jesus, I pray, AMEN!
