COMMUNION MEDITATION: Deliverance on Mount Zion

Deliverance on Mount Zion!

But on Mount Zion will be deliverance; it will be holy, and the house of Jacob will possess its inheritance. – Obadiah 17

God always held out a vision of hope for His people, even in a time of despair. In Obadiah’s day, there was national disaster. Jerusalem itself had been over-run by enemies who  gleefully looted all they could get their hands on.

Even their nearby neighbor and fellow-descendants of Abraham through Esau, Edom, gleefully rejoiced at Judah’s tragedy (and likely participated in the looting).

BUT God had a plan in place for their deliverance and for them to receive their inheritance!

God has much to say about Mount Zion, holiness, deliverance, and inheritance to us in the New Covenant Scriptures.

Babylon, nor any other conqueror of Judah, could deny God’s plan for His people fulfilled in the ultimate deliverer – the Christ.

You have come to Mount Zion, to the heavenly Jerusalem, the city of the living God. You have come to the church of the firstborn, whose names are written in heaven. You have come to God, the judge of all men, to the spirits of righteous men made perfect, to Jesus the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel. – Hebrews 12:22-24

Here is our ultimate deliverance. In Christ, we have already come to Zion, the heavenly Jerusalem. We are already citizens of heaven when our names are written there!

It is a time for us to rejoice and celebrate! Yes, the world around us is in shambles – but in Christ, we are delivered from this present evil age. This Table is a Table of Rejoicing. It is not a funeral pyre. It is to be more like the wedding feast of the Lamb of God.
