EMAIL MYTHS: ACLU & Crosses in Military Cemeteries

I recently received the following from a good friend who served honorably in the army. I understand his frustration (dare I say anger?). The email, as I received it, was complete with several impressive pictures. Here it is without the pictures.

I AM HONORED TO DO THIS!!

Did you know that the ACLU has filed a suit to have all military cross-shaped headstones removed and another suit to end prayer from the military completely.  They’re making great progress. The Navy Chaplains can no longer mention Jesus’ name in prayer thanks to the wretched ACLU and our new administration.

I’m not breaking this one.

If I get it a 1000 times, I’ll forward it a 1000 times!

Let us pray…

Prayer chain for our Military… Don’t break it!

Please send this on after a short prayer. Prayer for our soldiers Don’t break it!

Prayer:

‘Lord, hold our troops in your loving hands Protect them as they protect us Bless them and their families for the selfless acts they perform for us in our time of need. Amen.’

Prayer Request: When you receive this, please stop for a moment and say a prayer for our troops around the world.

There is nothing attached. Just send this to people in your address book. Do not let it stop with you. Of all the gifts you could give a Marine, Soldier, Sailor, Airman, & others deployed in harm’s way, prayer is the very best one.

GOD BLESS YOU FOR PASSING IT ON!

The only problem with this is that SNOPES.COM says it is not true. (See http://www.snopes.com/politics/religion/cemetery.asp.

My question for you in this blog is not whether or not we ought to be outraged at some of the ridiculous law suits brought by the ACLU on behalf of anyone who has a grievance against Christianity.

Instead, I suggest that we need to react to our outrage more rationally. It took me less than 30 seconds to find the above article of disclaimer on SNOPES.COM. I was tempted to forward the item on myself. After seeing how SNOPES quotes ACLU sources explicitly denying they have opposed crosses in military cemeteries, I decided not to forward it.

Now, there are some “cross removal” suits where the ACLU is aggressively involved on the side of removal. It is easy for us to miss the “fine points” of the law that the ACLU draws to distinguish the different situations.

But should we make false accusations because we are outraged? Does this descend to what (in other circumstances) we would call “gossip”?

There is another, very practical, consideration. Remember the old story about the boy who cried “Wolf” because he was lonely in his job as a watcher of sheep. When the real wolf showed up, no one would pay any attention to him. Do highly emotional complaints such as this make people who can affect outcomes pay little attention to legitimate complaints? If so, when we mindlessly pass on items like this, we aid and abet the cause we oppose.

In the end, it boils down to Job’s question to his accusers in Job 13:7, given below in multiple translations, all found at http://www.e-sword.net:

(American Standard Version)  Will ye speak unrighteously for God, And talk deceitfully for him?
(Bible in Basic English)  Will you say in God’s name what is not right, and put false words into his mouth?
(Bishops Bible)  Wyll you speake wickedlie for gods [defence] and talke deceitfully for his [cause?]
(Contemporary English Version)  Are you telling lies for God?
(Darby)  Will ye speak unrighteously for *God? and for him speak deceit?
(Douay-Rheims Bible)  Hath God any need of your lie, that you should speak deceitfully for him?
(English Standard Version)  Will you speak falsely for God and speak deceitfully for him?
(Geneva Bible)  Will ye speake wickedly for Gods defence, and talke deceitfully for his cause?
(Good News Bible)  Why are you lying? Do you think your lies will benefit God?
(God’s Word)  “Will you talk wickedly for God and talk deceitfully on his behalf?
(King James Version)  Will ye speak wickedly for God? and talk deceitfully for him?
(Literal Translation of the Holy Bible)  Would you speak unrighteously for God and speak deceitfully for Him?
(Modern King James Version)  Would you speak unrighteously for God, and talk deceitfully for Him?
(New International Version)  Will you speak wickedly on God’s behalf? Will you speak deceitfully for him?
(Revised Standard Version)  Will you speak falsely for God, and speak deceitfully for him?
(Revised Version)  Will ye speak unrighteously for God, and talk deceitfully for him?
(1833 Webster Bible)  Will ye speak wickedly for God? and talk deceitfully for him?
(Young’s Literal Translation)  For God do ye speak perverseness? And for Him do ye speak deceit?

  1. Jerry, so glad you made the point that if we send fictitious emails we are spreading an untruth. As you also pointed out, it takes only 2-3 minutes to check out most internet posts.

I have made this point many times to some Christian posters who don’t seem to grasp the parallel between spreading gossip and spreading false information via emails.

In a few cases, once they realized that i was serious and would send them followup emails about false information, they began checking before they hit the “send” button. Keep up the good work!!

  2. Snopes is not reliable. Do you have a better source? They are funded by George Soros.

    • Can you recommend a better source to “fact check”? I’m serious. I’ve heard others also say snopes has a liberal slant, though I’ve had no personal objections to them in checking backgrounds.

      • this has nothing to do with this article..i work with a couple of men who keep up with birthdays and deaths of different gospel preachers. today is the birthday of L B Chastain, and i was wondering if you could tell me what the L B stands for, for our records..thanks so much
