QUESTION: Where Does the Bible Speak of God Being Married to a Backslider?

Note: This question came to me via our church webpage, http://www.plymouth-church.com. I answered it there recently.

Where in the bible does it say God is married to the backslider?

In several passages in the Old Testament, the nations of Israel and Judah (originally the single kingdom of Israel, ruled by Saul, David, and Solomon – but divided after the end of Solomon’s rule) are spoken of as being married to the LORD.

For example, in Isaiah 54:5, the prophet wrote:

For your Maker is your husband – the LORD Almighty is His name – the Holy One of Israel is your Redeemer; He is called the God of all the earth.

These nations became backsliders – so God was married to a backsliding people. In their backsliding, they became guilty of “adultery” with the gods of the nations around them by worshipping idols.

Because of this adultery, God gave a certificate of divorce to Israel when they were carried away into Assyrian Captivity (see Isaiah 50:1). So, in a sense, God’s “wife” not only committed adultery, but He divorced her.

Ezekiel chapter 23 tells the story of the two sisters, Oholah and Oholibah, who went into adulterous affairs. These sisters were Israel and Judah. This chapter is quite graphic in describing the adultery of these sisters who were married to the LORD.

The first three chapters of Hosea tell the story of the prophet and his wife, Gomer. This story is an allegory of God and Israel. Gomer took strange lovers and eventually even left Hosea. In chapter 3, God told Hosea to again show his love to her. She had left him, but he found her for sale as a slave and bought her for 15 shekels of silver and some barley grain. He told her, “You are to live with me many days; you must not be a prostitute or be intimate with any man, and I will live with you” (v. 3).

This is an illustration of how God’s love continued to reach out for His people, even though they had sinned against Him.

In the New Testament, this idea continues as Jesus is married (actually, betrothed in the present time) to His church (see 2 Corinthians 11:2-3). In Ephesians 5:22-33, Jesus is pictured as married to the church, which marriage is an illustration of how marriage is to be between husbands and wives. I had a recent post on this passage here.

This marriage is consummated in Revelation 19:6-9 with the Wedding Supper of the Lamb of God. Also in Revelation 21:1-2, the new Jerusalem comes down out of heaven “prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband.” I also had a post on this here.

By this time, though, all of the backsliding is over. God’s people are purified and made holy in the blood of the Lamb – and “Now the dwelling of God is with men, and He will live with them. They will be His people, and God Himself will be their God” (Revelation 21:3).

  1. is the serpent seed doctrine true or false that satan had sex with eve to produce cain

    • Thank you for your question.

      Genesis 4:1 reads:

Now Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bore Cain, saying, “I have gotten a man with the help of the LORD.”

Two things in this verse point out that the doctrine you mention cannot be true.

First, Adam had sex with Eve and she conceived. That is the meaning of knew in this context.

Second, Eve said she had gotten a man with the help of the LORD. LORD is the conventional way of indicating that the word in the Hebrew is Yahweh or Jehovah. This is the word applied to the LORD God of Heaven, the Creator. This is not Satan. Nor did Yahweh have sex with Eve! Adam was the father of Cain; the LORD knit Cain together in Eve’s womb, just as he forms in the womb of the mother every baby that is born (see Psalm 139:13).

Of course, the Gnostics, a heretical group of the 2nd & 3rd centuries AD) believed that the God who created the heavens and the earth (Genesis 1:1) was an evil god, distinct from the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. There are many statements in the New Testament that are counter to this heresy. For example, John 1:1-3, 14 says:

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made…. And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.

This clearly says that the one who lived among us in the flesh who was full of grace and truth was with the creator in the beginning and was himself instrumental in the creation of all things. This was not some hypothetical evil god. It was the one who was manifest in the flesh as Jesus, the Christ.

Hebrews 1:1-3 and Colossians 1:15-20 also convey a similar message about Jesus.

  2. Can you willingly walk away from salvation?

    • Lenin, the answer is yes. One text that states this in clear language that is unequivocal is Hebrews 10:24-26. After exhorting those receiving this epistle to encourage one another to love and good works, for which purpose they are not to forsake the assembling of themselves together, the author adds, ‘For if we go on sinning deliberately after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins.’ (ESV).

This is but one of scores of passages that warn Christians of the dangers of turning away from the salvation they have received in Christ.
