So the LORD God said to the serpent, “…. And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.” – Genesis 3:14-15

This is not a prophecy about women being afraid of snakes, as I believed when I was very young.

Rather God speaks here of a coming “offspring” of the woman who would crush the serpent’s head. For millennia, the serpent has been a symbol of evil.

Last summer, we reacted viscerally to news reports a “pet” Burmese Python had crushed a baby girl in a town not far from where I live. Snakes are things we are wary of.

God said though that the coming one would crush the head of the serpent.

This serpent was the devil incarnate. Jesus came to destroy the devil, the one who held us captive by our lifelong fear of death. Jesus broke the power of the serpent by breaking the bonds of death itself.

How do I respond to what Jesus did? If Jesus set me free, why should I still live as if I were a captive to the devil’s will?

Jesus freed me from the curse of sin. He set me free to be free. Do I return to bondage, or live free?
