COMMUNION MEDITATION (27): Barabbas or Jesus?

Communion Meditation…

Barabbas or Jesus?

“Which of the two do you want me to release to you?” asked the governor. – Matthew 27:21

What a choice! The world’s first innocent man or a murderer? Jesus or Barabbas?

The priests knew which man they wanted to crucify. The other man could be the Devil incarnate, for all they cared – just so they could see Jesus hang on the cross! So they stirred up the crowd to ask that the notorious criminal be set free.

Jesus died in the place of Barabbas.

That name means something – “son of a father,” from bar for “son of” and a form of the Aramaic word abba for father. Jesus died in the place of a son of a father.

I am the son of a father. So are you, even the females of our species. When Paul said we are all sons of God by faith, he included the women in that word, “sons.” (See Galatians 3:26-29.)

Jesus died in my place.

What does that fact mean to me? Do I think about it, really think about it? Or is it so familiar to me I just say it without thought?

At this Table, I need to think about it – and act on it.
